An MMORPG Review: Ragnarok Online

Online games are very popular with the launch of platforms such as sonsaur unblocked games and one of the most played genres is definitely MMORPGs or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games. Among the best and one of the earliest released MMORPG is Ragnarok Online. It was officially released back in 2002 and a lot of people got hooked into playing. The gist of Ragnarok Online is you create your character and fight monsters all throughout different maps.

You then gain experience and your character’s stats and abilities would increase. You can also get items from monsters that you defeat and you can sell them directly to NPCs (non-playable characters) or trade them with other players. But then, that’s not the only thing the game has to offer. Let me show you some of the features and characteristics of the game.

Hardware Requirements, Graphics, and Audio. Let’s get into the technical aspects of the game. With the simple graphics and audio, Ragnarok Online is very much playable on most of the computers that are available today. The very minimum that you’d need in order to play the game is a 500 MHz CPU, 128 MB of RAM, Direct3D compatible video card with 32MB of Video RAM, and a Direct Sound compatible sound card.

The game works on Windows 98 up to Vista. The graphics of the game is just simple for the environment, character, and item designs. Oftentimes the game’s graphics are said to be cute and cartoon-like. The game also has background music that changes for almost every map you go to and the sound effects are good (includes character actions, monsters, environment, etc). But of course, since the game is quite old, the graphics are a bit outdated. The good news is that you can play the game without any problems if you are considering your computer hardware.

Game Information/Availability. Ragnarok Online, as with some of the other online games, is on a Pay to Play basis. This means that you need to pay a certain amount of money in order for you to play your characters. The game is also published in different countries or regions and game time can only be used in the area where you purchased it.

For example, you bought a 1 month game time from iRO (International Ragnarok Online), you can now play your account in iRO but you cannot play in kRO (Korean Ragnarok Online) and vice versa. Check first if you have a local publisher of the game or you can go ahead and play in it. You can also purchase premium items and services. These are usually items that you can use in the game to boost your character’s stats or some items such as equipment and cards.

Let’s also take note that Ragnarok now has Free to Play servers in some of the Ragnarok Online publishers such as iRO and pRO (Philippine Ragnarok Online). And at the moment, the servers are named either Valhalla and/or Valkyrie.

It is possible that the name may change in the future. There are also some that we call private servers wherein the game is managed by a different entity (individual or group of people) and is usually free to play and customized. These are not sanctioned by Gravity and playing in private servers could place you at risk. It is suggested that you stay on commercial pay-to-play servers for better support and updates.

Gameplay and Features. Ragnarok Online has a lot to boast when it comes to gameplay. The game has its own currency and at the moment, there are 2 types. Zeny, which is the in-game money and Credits (the name may be different depending on which type of Ragnarok Online it is) which can be used to but premium items or services.

Over the years, more and more features are incorporated into the game. The most notable would be the quests. There are literally more than a hundred quests that you can do that will make you play the game for a long time. Aside from leveling up your character, you can engage in a simple to complex quests where you can earn more money, acquire items and equipment, gain experience, and much more.

When you create your character, you can choose what job your character would be and the skills of your character will depend on it. If you choose to be an Acolyte, most probably you would be a healer and/or party support. There are 8 base jobs available and you as you level your character up (there are also some other special jobs available aside from the 8 base jobs), you can change into any of the advanced classes and eventually, change into the transcendent class. Your character has stats that affect how your character would fare in battle which is strength, agility, vitality, intelligence, dexterity, and luck.

It’s up to you what you want to develop but depending on your job, you may want to develop a specific stat like strength to increase the damage of your physical attacks. Ragnarok Online also features a huge world with hundreds of maps available where you can roam and fight monsters. You will encounter easy-to-kill enemies and you may also encounter bosses which take a while to beat but could possibly give you excellent items and equipment.

Another great feature of Ragnarok Online is the party and guild system where you can team up with your friends and battle monsters or other parties in PVP (Player versus Player). There is also the War of Emperium where guilds test their mettle against each other to see who the best is. This is truly one of the good aspects of the game since not only you will be playing a game but you’ll encounter other people playing the game as well. You’ll meet new friends and possibly rivals and for a few people that I know, even romance.

The future of Ragnarok Online. Ragnarok Online has had lots of updates and the developers are continuing to make the gameplay more enjoyable and fair to everyone. We can expect more exciting updates in the future. I’ve been playing the game since its beta testing stage back in 2001. I can’t see myself quitting the game as of yet. It’s truly a classic game that has touched the hearts and lives of a lot of people. Enjoy playing and watch your gaming time.
